TP-Link AC1300 – USB 3
We have a new asus that suddenly decided it could no longer pick up a wifi signal over ten feet from the station. I gave this antenna a shot as the path of least resistance because of the small size and small price, but i kept getting error messages saying the installation was not complete. Their web page is useless, so i would say make sure you hang on to the installation disk. It turned out the installation was complete in spite of the error messages, and it now has wifi range like exponential. One star off for aggravation, but so far, i am in awe.
I found myself needing to get a makeshift office set up to work from home while on lockdown. My computer is in a house two floors directly below my router. I would call the speed i’m getting ‘minimally acceptable. ‘ i’m sure my proximity to the router is a contributing factor, but other devices on this same floor and farther away seem to get better results. With mobile data turned off, my phone is getting 30mbps download over wifi while my pc with this adapter gets under 10mbps in the same location. Ultimately i’m going to stick with a powerline adapter as my long term solution which is getting substantially better speeds. I’m doing a lot of video conferencing and i wish this had worked slightly better for my situation. But, if you have low-bandwidth needs, this should be perfectly fine.
My laptop’s wireless card is a piece of — well, you can guess. I looked at some super expensive wifi adapters and then at this one, and thought, well, for $10, how can i not try this first?.Previously, i could not be further than about 15′ from our home’s router. My study, about 20′ away: frequently zero reception. Even when connected, the connection would time out sporadically and interrupt my work or uploads (i do a lot of high res photo stuff so this was more than annoying). Now: full bar connections anywhere in my 1200 sq ft apartment. Way faster download/upload speeds.
I ordered this for my son’s desktop because he’s a teenager and decides to be rough on everything and has broken off two different pci-e network cards that i installed in his gaming computer. I finally got tired of replacing them and gave him one of these. He thought it was cool at first, but he didn’t realize what i had in store for him. I put his smart tv, phone, xbox, and gaming pc all on the 2. 4ghz network and set a mac filter on my router to allocate certain bandwidth to his devices. If you have a teen gamer like me, you know they have the gaming pc going, tv, phone, xbox all at the same time. How the hell they do that is beyond meso, long story short, after a month of his games lagging and his tv and phone buffering, i told him what i did. He was pissed obviously, but hey, i’m the parent. . And i thought it was hilarious. He has since learned the importance of taking care of his equipment and that his dad being a computer tech is not so cool anymoreanyways, product works great.
This product is an amazing deal for the price and truly deserves 5 stars if you are using windows. (i am not)pros:low profileaffordableexcellent wifi signal range and strength (i can detect wireless access points from a good distance and get really good download/upload rates)supports both 2. 4ghz and 5ghz wireless networkscons:(for linux) doesn’t work out of the box (you need to install the latest realtek driver)just google ‘tp-link ac600 linux ‘ and you will find a link to download the driver (most likely on github)tested with linux mint 19. 3there are other usb wifi adapters on amazon that do work with linux out of the box but they are larger in size and i wanted a super low-profile device so this product is perfect, with some tinkering if you use linux.
