Sony UBP-X700 4K Ultra High Definition 3D Blu-Ray Player
The sony ubp-x700 is a replacement for the former ubp-x800. The new player is smaller and more lightweight than its predecessor. It’s about the size of most recent sony blu-ray players. It produces a solid 4k picture that looks like it was from a more expensive player. The set up is very simple–just choose your language and set up your wireless connection for the basics. Most of the default settings work fine for most users. The operation is very intuitive. When the opening screen comes up, press the open/eject button, insert your disc and press play and your done. This 4k player has 2 hdmi outputs–one for audio/video and the second for audio only. This is very helpful if you are using a receiver with this player.
It has a few quirks that i don’t like, but they aren’t deal breakers, i’ll just take off 1 star. Other than these quirks/annoyances, it works just fine and gives a great picture. —–update: ignore quirk #1. Turns out it remembered where you left off. But only after you choose language for the video, and actually push ‘play’ to start the movie, it will give a screen prompt if you want to resume where you left off. Not intuitive, and it seems to remember only one disk. —-back to original review:quirk/annoyance 1) it doesn’t remember where you left off when you turn the unit off. If it’s on, and the disk hasn’t been ejected, it’ll remember where you left off in the movie. Quirk/annoyance 2) it has a beginning menu that shows all apps and inputs of the player. That seems nice, but it takes it longer to boot up and recognize that a disk is inserted. And it doesn’t start the disk right away; you have to choose it from among all those apps and inputs. Most players start the disk immediately, but this one only seems to do that when you insert a disk before turning on the television. Either it starts playing disks before the tv has time to boot up or it makes you wait and then select the disk. Well that’s backwards, and a waste of time. Quirk/annoyance 3: if you leave a disk in the player, then upon powering up again, the aspect ratio is incorrect. It stretches the picture sideways, both 4:3 and 16:9 are distorted. There aren’t any settings on the dvd player to adjust the aspect temporarily.
errata: i incorrectly stated dolby vision shuts off for non-dolby vision movies. At the moment it is not doing that and the feature needs to be manually disabled. I am hoping that future versions will correct this. This player finally checks all of the boxes: affordable, capable, and supports dolby vision with a free firmware update. The player itself feels a bit flimsy, much like the sub $100 commoditized players sony and others sell in department stores. But the visual quality is superb and will deliver better visuals thanks to dolby vision provided your movie and your television support that hdr format. The player performs nicely with a relatively quiet operation and a smattering of apps that are likely already on your tv. Blu-ray movies load quickly and play back reliably. See more details in the attached video review.
Good user interface, great features, and easy to configure. Only complain is the power supply adapter that comes with it. Like most people i put this player into an entertainment center with a power strip in the back to plug all a/v equipment poser cords. That power adapter is so wide that it blocks the adjacent power outlets.
It just does what they say it does. The separate audio output is genius. If you’re not investing in an atmos sound system just yet, and who is?.The separate hdmi port lets you connect to your existing audio. Controls are simple and if your smart tv is up to the task, and whose isn’t?. You can control some functions through the tv remote. Make sure you’re buying the x-700, the 800 is the older model and does not have the dolby vision upgrade (over the internet) and the built in wifi is a big plus.
