Sony X80j 65 Inch Tv: 4k Ultra Hd Led Smart Google Tv
My first flat-panel was a 40′ bravia and it’s still used by my parents in their bedroom. A few years ago, i got a 55′ lg oled for our living room, but it had serious screen burn-in despite being careful. Since it was way out of warranty and would be costly to fix, i decided to try out the 55′ x80j. The packaging is well-designed, so unboxing was easy. Really truly grateful it arrived safely and screen wasn’t cracked. Setting everything up wasn’t too bad. Since it’s integrated with google, it almost felt like i was setting up an android phone. I do wish they didn’t basically force you to sign in to a google account though, but you can use the tv without it, but it’s slightly annoying if you want to use various streaming apps/services without it. The ui could be better, especially when you have the google home main screen to access all the apps, but it’s certainly nice to have physical buttons on the remote for youtube, netflix, disney+, and prime video.
It literally walked me through each step from wifi to channels to adding apps and inputting log-in info for each one. My biggest issue was literally attaching the legs and that may have been because i was nervous and not wanting to mess anything up. I was disappointed that it doesn’t offer a roku app because my grandson’s favorite fgteev channel is only accessible through it but i can get the roku stick so it’s not a deal-breaker. The brilliant and vibrant colors on the screen take my breath away. The reds, blues, green, etc pop and the black is so deep it’s mesmerizing. It makes every movie, cartoon and tv show so much more of a joy to watch. There are different color settings for whatever you’re doing – movies, games and a few others – and you can manually program in the brightness yourself if you prefer. (i picked for it to automatically do it and the depth of the colors are amazing)the speakers and sound is fantastic.
Set up for this tv is relatively easy–we were watching programs in less than an hour after opening the box. The setup screens that are displayed when the unit is turned on for the first time provide easy instructions and useful hints. It took another hour or two to fine tune and adjust the many settings to our liking. The written instructions that come with the tv are very basic and illustrate how to insert the legs into the bottom of the tv or how to mount it on the wall. More useful and detailed operating instructions are available on the sony website under support, or on the included remote’s help button. Here is a list of our peripheral devices and how they are connected (in parenthesis): motorola cable box (hdmi), samsung sound bar (hdmi/arc), sony blu-ray (hdmi), sony vcr/cd (avi), logitech harmony 650 remote (ir) and netgear network (wifi). Two remotes are necessary for us to control all the components of our system. The remote that is included with the tv works well with the tv apps and the sound bar only. The logitech universal remote is used to control everything else. We’re able to scroll the channel listings of the charter/spectrum cable box with the sony remote, but some charter/spectrum menus and screens must be accessed using the logitech remote.
I have been using this 43′ sony television in a bedroom for approximately an hour a day for a little over two weeks. (2nd sony bravia) and is solely for streaming via wifi (high speed internet >400 mbps/sec download). Is not connected to any devices (no cable, fire stick, roku, antenna, etc. Overall i am quite satisfied having this as a 3rd, occasionally used television and rate this choice with 4* (i like it) for the following reasons. – the display quality is highly satisfactory for my needs (typically sitting in bed around 6′ from the screen)- the sound is also highly satisfactory. After letting the sound settings adjust during my initial set up, i haven’t had to adjust it- speaking of set up, it was very easy. I used the google home app as recommended and though i don’t use that app for anything else, it made this set up quite simple- having both youtube and amazon prime video buttons on the remote for immediate access is a plus for me since these are the two apps i typically use. Espn) are easy to access from the home page- the 43′ size is exactly what i needed and the footprint with the table stand base installed is under 12′ deep.
A very clear & sharp picture. Certainly cuts glare from multiple windows & deck door. I would highly recommend this unit.
